2023 SFOS VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Join us in uplifting local art by VOLUNTEERing to work with ArtSpan during this year’s SF Open Studios! Help us honor the incredible contributions of artists to the vibrancy of San Francisco during our 49th year of our legacy program.
We are seeking dependable volunteers able to assist with a variety of roles:

Wednesday, 10/11
Gallery Wall Gridding
Wednesday, 10/11, 11:00am-3:00pm
Work with ArtSpan staff to measure and install string to grid out the exhibition spaces in the SOMArts gallery. Be prepared to climb step-stools or ladders while tacking strings into place. Wear comfortable closed-toe shoes and clothes you can move and get a bit dirty in.
Thursday, 10/12
Pedestal Bench Builder
Thursday, 10/12, 11:00am-4:00pm
Put together pieces of wood panels to construct the long sculpture podium that lines the northern wall in the gallery and give the constructed bench a coat of paint to clean up any markings. Wear closed-toed shoes and clothes you can get dirty in.

Exhibition Hanging Installer Shift 1

Guide SFOS artists to the correct location where their artwork is to be hung within the gallery and assist them in hanging it correctly centered within the 20”x 20” allotted gridded wall space. Ideal volunteers have prior experience with hanging artwork and can use proper installation hardware. Please wear closed-toed shoes and comfortable clothing. Mask wearing is optional.

Sunday, 10/15
Gallery Finishing Touches & Vinyl Install Prep
Sunday, 10/15, 9:00am-12:00pm
Help clean up the gallery, place artwork labels, straighten and wax artworks to secure them to the wall. Will also need assistance on placing of vinyl, putting up signage throughout the gallery, and puttying holes plus other duties as assigned. Please wear closed-toed shoes and comfortable clothing; mask wearing is optional.
Vinyl Lettering Install + Final Gallery Clean Up
Sunday, 10/15 3:00-7:00pm
Install SFOS lettering above each of the Weekend Walls and Title Wall. Experience in vinyl installation is required as vinyl signs are large and will be placed high on the gallery walls. Please wear closed-toed shoes and comfortable clothing and be prepared to climb ladders. Mask wearing is optional.

Pre-ArtLaunch Gallery Prep
Thursday, 10/19, 1:00-4:00pm
Prepare the gallery for the big reception! String elastic band along the baseboard and place postcards according to artist, place QR labels and test codes. Other duties as assigned. Please wear closed-toed shoes and comfortable clothing.
ArtLaunch Check-In Greeter Shift 1
Thursday, 10/20, 5:30-7:30pm
Greet attendees & SFOS artists who have registered to attend. Check each person in using the guest list provided and them with one complimentary drink ticket. You will be checking in VIP guests that will be provided with a wristband. Notify the ArtSpan staff lead if guests need to purchase an admission ticket. Wear comfortable warm clothes as you will be seated outside. Dress in all black. Mask wearing is optional.
ArtLaunch Check-In Greeter Shift 2

Greet attendees & SFOS artists who have registered to attend. Check each person in using the guest list provided and them with one complimentary drink ticket. Notify the ArtSpan staff lead if guests need to purchase an admission ticket. Wear comfortable warm clothes as you will be seated outside. Dress in all black. Mask wearing is optional.

Art Tasting/Amplify Awards Ceremony - Hospitality/Bartender Crew
Wednesday, 11/8, 5:00-8:30pm
Prepare the food serving area and bar stations. Help staff set out food platters with serving ware. Pour wine and water for guests. Keep the food stations tidy and consolidate platters as food is taken by guests. Wear gloves when handling food and platters. Collect and throw out empty glasses, plates and napkins. Collect ArtSpan donations. Break down stations at the close of the event. Wear comfortable shoes and dress in all black. Mask wearing is optional.

Wednesday, 11/8, 6:00-8:00pm
Carefully take winning artworks off the wall, walk them over to the stage and hold the artwork while artists and jurors speak. Must be comfortable handling art and can withstand standing still for 10+ minutes. Dress in all black. Mask wearing is optional.

Exhibition Artwork Pick-Up Greeter
Sunday, 11/19, 3:00-7:00pm
Greet artists and buyers as they arrive to pick up artwork and document in the log book that it has left the gallery. Direct them to a deinstall assistant to locate wrapped artwork. Dress in layers as you will be seated near an open roll-up door. Mask wearing is optional.
Exhibition Deinstall Assistant
Sunday, 11/19, 3:00-7:00pm
Wrap sold artwork for buyer pick up and unsold artwork for artist pick up. Organize wrapped artworks by weekend sections and artist last name so it can be easily located for pick-up. Help ArtSpan staff remove labels, patch wall holes and deconstruct the exhibition. Ideal volunteers for this role will have some prior art handling and wrapping experience. Please wear closed-toed shoes and comfortable clothing. Mask wearing is optional.

Help ArtSpan staff remove labels, patch wall holes and deconstruct the exhibition. Ideal volunteers for this role will have some prior art handling and wrapping experience. Must be comfortable climbing ladders, bending down, carrying heavy or bulky items and handling tools. Please wear closed-toed shoes and comfortable clothing. Mask wearing is optional.

All artwork will be wrapped up already. Help ArtSpan staff remove labels, signs, patch wall holes, deconstruct the exhibition, remove vinyl and take down the pedestal bench. Must be comfortable climbing ladders, bending down, carrying heavy or bulky items and handling tools. Please wear closed-toed shoes and comfortable clothing. Mask wearing is optional.
